Teaching for Deep Learning

How can we design learning that students attend to, think about, remember and use?

A busy lesson is not always a lesson that stays with pupils

A class can look settled and productive while pupils are completing work without connecting ideas, remembering what matters or doing enough of the thinking for themselves. Teachers make many small decisions about attention, memory, questioning, practice and technology that shape what learning lasts.

This course helps you use evidence from the science of learning to examine those decisions and design a real teaching sequence with greater care.

Design learning that pupils can attend to, think about, remember and use.

You'll leave able to

  • Explain how attention, working memory, long-term memory and prior knowledge influence learning, and identify unnecessary cognitive demands and sources of distraction in learning design.
  • Use retrieval and spacing to support lasting learning.
  • Design questions and tasks that require students to explain, connect and reason.
  • Make informed decisions about modelling, scaffolding and productive struggle.
  • Use classroom dialogue to develop understanding.
  • Evaluate the role of digital technology and generative AI within a learning task, and redesign learning using an evidence-informed understanding of how students learn.

How you'll learn

Every course we run is built on what research says makes professional learning change practice. Here is what that looks like in this one.

Build knowledge

Research on attention, memory and cognitive load, retrieved and revisited across sessions.

Set your goal

You work on a real unit or sequence you teach now or soon.

Practise the technique

Fixed small groups critique and rehearse the changes to your unit.

Embed it in practice

Your small group supports practical follow-through on your own teaching.

Evidence & methodology

The course combines research input, practical classroom examples, discussion, collaborative analysis and structured time to work on your own teaching. Participants work with a real unit, sequence of learning or substantial piece of curriculum that they currently teach or expect to teach soon. Fixed small groups support critique, rehearsal and practical follow-through.

The course draws on research from cognitive science, the science of learning and international education research, including work on attention, memory, cognitive load, retrieval practice, cognitive activation, classroom dialogue and digital distraction.

The aim is not to turn research findings into universal classroom rules. Throughout the course, participants examine the strength and limitations of the evidence and consider how it applies across different ages, subjects and educational contexts.

Why Stockholm

Most courses run at our base in Vasastan, a few minutes' walk from Odenplan, with cafés and a park close by. We confirm the venue with each group before the course. Arlanda is about 40 minutes away by commuter train or airport coach, with no change needed. Between sessions there is time to walk by the water and reflect. We find people learn better that way.
