When pupils can see their thinking, they can do more with it

A pupil may have good ideas but struggle to organise them, explain their reasoning or turn them into a clear spoken or written response. When working memory, language or task organisation are under pressure, thinking can remain hidden from the pupil as well as the teacher.

This course explores practical visual tools that help pupils organise ideas, make their reasoning visible and take greater control of their learning.

Give pupils practical ways to organise ideas, explain their thinking and work with greater independence.

You'll leave able to

  • Explain what metacognition is and how visual organisers can support planning, monitoring and evaluating learning, without relying on the discredited idea of fixed “visual learners”.
  • Choose between six flexible organiser types: concept models, comparison grids, classification charts, sequence strips, cause-and-consequence maps, and claim–evidence–reasoning frames.
  • Model an organiser so that pupils understand the thinking it represents, and use organisers for reading, discussion, explanation and writing across subjects.
  • Use visual supports to reduce unnecessary barriers for some pupils with SEND while maintaining appropriate intellectual challenge.
  • Fade a scaffold so that pupils increasingly choose and use appropriate strategies independently.

Programme & method

Programme at a glance

Part 1

Metacognition and visual structures

How graphic organisers support planning, monitoring and evaluating learning.

Part 2

Inclusive modelling, independent use

Modelling organisers for reading, discussion and writing, and adapting them.

How you'll learn

Every course we run is built on what research says makes professional learning change practice. Here is what that looks like in this one.

Build knowledge

Concise explanations and worked examples of how visual organisers support planning, monitoring and evaluating learning.

Set your goal

You work towards one visual routine to introduce with your own pupils.

Practise the technique

You model each organiser, rehearse it and adapt it, with feedback from your fixed group.

Embed it in practice

An optional online follow-up lets you review what happened when you introduced one routine, and refine the next step.

Evidence & methodology

The course builds knowledge through concise explanation and worked examples, then develops technique through modelling, rehearsal, peer feedback and practical adaptation. Fixed groups provide continuity through the day. The follow-up session helps participants review what happened when they introduced one routine, identify where pupils needed more or less support, and refine the next step.

The course draws on the Education Endowment Foundation’s 2025 guidance on metacognition and self-regulated learning, including explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding of planning, monitoring and evaluation strategies. It also draws on the EEF’s SEND guidance on cognitive strategies and graphic organisers, alongside Swedish national guidance on visual support and graphic models in teaching.
