Teaching Vibe Coding in Schools

How can students use AI to build working apps, and how do we teach and assess the thinking behind them?

Build your own application using Lovable, then learn to teach students to create, test and improve their own AI-assisted digital tools.

Students can build apps. Now what?

AI-assisted app building means students can move from an idea to a working application in minutes. The challenge is making sure that becomes worthwhile learning. Teachers need the confidence to decide what is worth building, guide the process, assess student thinking when AI has produced much of the code, and address privacy, safety and the technology's limitations.

Create something useful. Bring the process back to school.

The course is designed for teachers who want to explore AI-assisted app building with students without needing a programming background. Bring a laptop you can use throughout the week. No coding experience is required.

Students might create an interactive guide to local history, a tool for presenting their own science data or an early version of a business idea. The point is not technology for its own sake. It is giving students a reason to define a problem, make decisions, test what they have built and explain their thinking.

It will be especially useful for colleagues planning interdisciplinary projects or looking for a practical way to develop student agency, design judgement and responsible use of AI.

You'll leave able to

  • Build and improve a working web application.
  • Turn real problems into clear design briefs, project knowledge and prompts.
  • Explain in plain language how a large language model responds, and where its limits are.
  • Work responsibly with assets, data and connectors.
  • Design interdisciplinary, curriculum-linked student projects.
  • Assess students' reasoning, design decisions and process.
  • Address responsible AI use, privacy and safety.

What you'll learn

You will build and test applications, receive peer feedback, investigate classroom scenarios and design a practical learning sequence for your students.

You will learn how large language models respond to prompts and context, why they can be useful and why they can be wrong. You will work with project knowledge, assets, files, data and connectors in ways that are practical for a classroom and responsible for a school.

You will work through short, clear inputs, live demonstration, hands-on building, peer critique and protected planning time. You will work in small groups as well as on your own prototype, then rehearse the teaching moves that help students plan, test, explain and improve their work.

Stockholm origin

Lovable began in Stockholm, and this is a useful place to explore how an idea becomes a practical digital tool.

Programme & method

Programme at a glance

Day 1

Making a first working app.

Build a small application in Lovable, then trace the decisions behind it: what the prompt asked for, what the tool supplied and where human judgement was still needed. Develop a practical understanding of how a large language model uses patterns and context to generate a response, and why that response still needs checking.

Day 2

Designing for a real user.

Turn an initial idea into a clearer brief. Decide what an app should help someone do, give the project useful context and work with assets that support the user experience. Test and improve both the interface and the underlying logic.

Day 3

From prototype to meaningful project.

Develop an application around a real interdisciplinary question. Explore the information it needs, how files and data might be used, and what changes when an app connects to another service. Consider permissions, privacy and the limitations that must remain visible.

Day 4

Teaching the process, not just the tool.

Plan how students can define a problem, prompt, test, explain and revise their work. Consider what evidence makes their thinking visible, how to assess the process as well as the product, and where clear boundaries for AI use are needed.

Day 5

Building a classroom-ready sequence.

Turn your prototype into a teachable project, receive peer critique and set out a realistic first version to try with students. Leave with a practical sequence, an assessment approach and the next steps for your own context.
